Adjust the Size of a Picture



You can specify the size of the final scanned picture.  During the final scan, the area inside the selection border is scaled to the specified size.  Be aware that the dimensions of the moving selection border, as drawn on the preview picture, do not change when you specify a size.  But when you click Accept, the contents of the selected area will be scaled to the specified size.


>>> To specify the size of the final picture
1  Be certain that a selection border exists.
2  Click the Options button.  The Size Settings option is automatically selected.
3  Select Specify Custom Size.
4  Type in the desired width or height of the final picture.  The other value will be filled in automatically.  This ensures that the picture always keeps its aspect ratio and is not distorted in one direction.  The lock symbol appears as a reminder that the width and height values are connected to each other.
5  If necessary, select the desired unit.
6  Click OK.  The requested values appear in the status bar at the bottom of HP PictureScan's main screen.  Remember, this does not change the size of the selection border.

1  Look at the status bar at the bottom of HP PictureScan's main screen.  Reading from left to right, the sections indicate:- The width and height that the scanned picture will be after the final scan.- The amount of scaling that will occur during the final scan.  100% indicates no scaling.- The amount of memory required to display the picture in HP PicturePlace.- The resolution or number of dots per inch (dpi) that will be used during the final scan of the picture.

If you know that you want the final picture to be a certain size, specify that size in HP PictureScan before you click Accept.  Doing so produces a higher-quality picture.  Although some software packages allow you to change the size later, changing the size after scanning is completed often reduces the quality of the final picture.

The memory requirement is influenced by the size of the selected area and how much it will be scaled to match the specified size, the type of picture, and the resolution of the picture.  The appropriate resolution level is determined automatically by the HP PictureScan software based on the type of picture being scanned (for example, a photograph versus a drawing) and the type of printer specified with the Options button.

If a lock appears in the status bar, it means Specify Custom Size was selected.  If you adjust the selection border, it will stretch or shrink in both directions so the aspect ratio is maintained.

Some software packages that support TWAIN determine, in advance, what size the final scanned picture must be.  In this case, you cannot change the size values within HP PictureScan.  The Specify Custom Size option will be grayed out or dimmed.  You can adjust the selection border, but the picture inside that border will be scaled to the size requested by the software package.
